Description

When I was a teenager, one of the first comic strip reference books I owned was The Smithsonian Collection of Newspaper Comics. This book opened up a whole new world for me, as it introduced me to the works of many cartoonists who I was either unfamiliar with, or knew little about. One of these cartoonists was Roy Crane. The whaling story sequence in the book is one of Crane's best stories, and it impacted me immediately. I was particularly struck by his pen work in this story, as well as the wonderful narrative, especially regarding the whales and whaling industry. This particular daily, with the image of the whale blubber being stripped away, stuck with me for years. Fast forward to the 1990s. I had picked up some work that a Crane collector was interested in. He offered me two dailies from the whaling sequence, including this one that had been seared into my memory. I was all too happy to pull the trigger on the trade. The daily dates from May 16, 1933 and is huge!

Wow, right out of Moby Dick, a purely documentary sequence. Fantastic.
