Roy Crane (1901-1977) was the master of the bigfoot adventure strip. In terms of storytelling, there were few better than Crane, who took his characters to more exotic locales than most any other cartoonist. Using the National Geographic as his primary visual source, Crane wove a wonderfully palette of landscapes and locations for Wash Tubbs and Captain Easy. But more than anything, Crane knew how to develop characters. His villains, Bull Dawson in particular, were truly villainous, which made for a good back and forth with his heroes.
Roy Crane is considered one of the most influential of cartoonists, affecting many artists in his wake, such as Charles Schulz.
