Description
Bull Dawson was to Wash Tubbs and Captain Easy, what Bluto (or Brutus) was to Popeye. Crane's character was one of the true great comic strip villains of all time; a wonderfully despicable fellow. This panel is from the July 2, 1935 daily strip, and pretty much features Dawson's philosophy on life. He was, of course, planning on getting even with Wash and Easy.

Crane cut up many of these panels himself, as a way of showing his style to his assistants. Nonetheless, Crane's prime work remains fairly scarce, as most of it is in a university collection (Syracuse). You can see the complete printed strip in the additional images.

My thanks to Sean Conlon for parting with this.

A great portrait of Bull, a real archetype of the 1930's comic villain.
