i've had this one for awhile now, and finally putting it up. i have always loved kirby's approach to landscape and this scene of desolation in a land crater/rock formations is a visual stunner. here the reader is confronted with "what earth would be like after a great disaster has changed the world"... and in a word... bleak - emphasized by an absence of any vegetation. kirby's inventive take of the rock formations evoke the outsider spires of simon rodilla's watts towers, and the off kilter set designs of the german expressionist film, the cabinet of dr. caligari. berry's inks don't have the delicacy of royer, but man, his inks look fantastic here. on top of the beautiful abstraction, there is kamandi's voice: "this rugged crater country is alive with sounds... musical sounds..." and if you stare at the page long enough, well, you just might hear them!

Wonderful splash Steve! I agree about Kirby's landscapes, Kamandi and Devil Dino really allowed him the freedom to go wild with it as well. Congrats!!!

Kamandi in general is such a great comic. Where other Kirby comics are rooted in Manhattan or tied to the overarching narrative of the New Genesis-Apocalypse war, Kamandi is a true picaresque. Every issue we stumble into some fresh wonderland. Literally anything might happen. It feels like Jack was happy doing this book.
