Descriptiona curiosity about kirby's collages was what got me into collecting art in the first place, because i wanted to see one of kirby's collages in person. i know there is a bit of controversy about the value of these works - i don't mean in terms of money, but how they fit into his overall body of work. some folks think that kirby slipped collages into the mix because they could be done faster than penciling a page (which i highly doubt), while others - such as myself - see them as kirby experimenting with a different kind of graphic language and effect. i would say that the fact that he published collages sporadically throughout his career should be enough to suggest that they were not only important to his creative process, but also important enough that he was willing to insert them into his stories. i think the collages were not only important to the narratives, but to his process overall - for cutting out forms to make new forms is quite a different activity than drawing with a pencil. for me, when a collage is placed within the context of a book otherwise entirely rendered in pen and ink, the unexpected language of collage arrives as a shock, acting as a portal to another dimension. here, is one of jack's later masterpieces using the collage medium - and it is, i believe, the last collage he created for publication. it's a gigantic twice-up two page spread filled with complexity and a lot of very detailed scissor and hand work - for instance, every single tiny white dot has been individually laid down with a brush (not sprayed nor flecked)... or maybe i should've just said, this thing is so freaking amazing and i'm so happy to own it!!!Social/Sharing |

I certainly agree on the importance of collage, & I would observe that planets exploding against a cosmic background is the sort of thing Jack could draw in his sleep, whereas creating the same thing out of magazine fragments would have been a whole different way to engage his star-drive of a creative faculty, and a way to measure the tremendous weight of this moment in the narrative. As a collector, I can't really imagine how you could top this.

I also love that he made the floating city out of collage too-- his usual strategy would have been to draw that piece.

I have a Kirby collage colour poster wich shows a space ship with space backgroung, I do not know where it is from. His usual comic book collages were just black and white with drawn elements or charakters (FF, New Gods, Thor) on them, sometimes coloured afterwards. But seeing his collage stuff in full collour without quality loss due reproduction must be amazing, especially in full size. I agree that doing good collages takes a lot of time, let alone going through and picking the source material. Planing the layout, cutting everything and finally putting the pieces together. That must have taken him way more time than just drawing it. As we know he could start at the upper left corner and finish a page in the lower right, just like that. Congrats Steve for one of Kirby's best collage examples I have seen.

Wow! I am so jealous! What an amazing piece of work! I'm not saying it's better than Kirby's incredible pencils, but it's really, really interesting! What a great insight it gives on Kirby's thought process. I love this piece! I don't know if it's comic art, but I love it.
