Description

I loved this pinup by Jack and Chic and for over five years I coveted this work, but never had the cash to buy it until this year.

While Chic did not draw the background that was in the finished piece published in Avengers 11, this is a childhood grail recreated come home.

Let me also say that I think Chic does not get enough credit for what he brought to Jack's pencils. To the youngster weaned on DC books but intrigued my Marvel, Kirby's work always looked murky , dark and ugly inked by the likes of Marvel stalwarts such as Dick Ayers, George Russos and Paul Reinman.

Then came Avengers 6 and like daylight breaking through on a cloudy day Kirby's work was suddenly beautiful and contained to be as the King was abetted by inkers such as Giacoa, Wood and Sinnott, But it was Chic who was his breakthrough inker.

Great piece! I agree that Chic Stone never got the recognition he deserved!

I adore Kirby and Stone and am glad I got to correspond with Chic some before he passed.

Everyone has their favorites and Chic with the King is definitely one of mine. In my opinion Chic was the first Marvel artist of the Silver Age to make Jack's work look "pretty."

The principle artists working on Jack at that time were, Ayers Reinman and Russos/Bell. Chic brought a new look to Kirby's work which was followed by such greats as Giacoa and Sinnott.

While no one can touch Joe' work on the FF, Chic's work on Cap and those three issues of the Avengers, make him my favorite Cap artist,closely followed by the great Frank Giacoa.

I started collecting art a few years after Chic passed and wish I had been able to tell him how much his work meant to me.

Same for Don Heck. whose greatest sin was he had to follow Kirby in an age where fans wanted all Kirby all the time. I have so come to appreciate Don's work in recent years not only in terms of layouts and storytelling but his Caniff influenced style.
