Description

Original write-up: Eddie Brock as Venom breaks out of prison after the alien symbiote comes to him, and .... pure Marvel magic happens when the symbiote has a liquid, living drop fall next to good ol' Kletus. As Randy Emberlin wrote on the top of the page, 'Carnage is born'. Bagley pencilled this as a fill-in issue for Erik Larsen. Purchased directly from Randy at the SDCC.

Addendum: Since I posted this page many years ago without much fanfare, a sub-set of original art collecting has taken hold of our 'investment' hobby now. Without identifying the numerous collectors who have elevated birth and first appearance original art pages to all time highs, this is a birth page where the alien symbiote first touches Kletus to help him become Carnage. As a result, I changed the title heading now that I have moved this to my Featured gallery section.

Bagley did a great job of evoking Erik Larsen's style here. I also think Randy Emberlin was a very good inker. Thanks for sharing this cool page!

I actually scored this page in 1991 in Randy Emberlin's stack on his table, Anthony. I was surprised that he did not have more action at his table since he was becoming Bagley's collaboration partner.

Even better! Did you ask about the relevance of Carnage? He didn't appear in the comic until '92.

Valid question. You have to remember that the writer and artists create comic stories and arcs months in advance. When I purchased this page from Randy in August 1991, David Michelinie, Mark Bagley, and Randy probably were all on board with the creation of Carnage. While the 361 issue did not hit newstands until April or May 1992, they were well aware of Carnage's coming debut. Did I ask about Carnage? I do not recall, but I am sure that Randy would not have revealed too much.

Man oh man this is so epic!  You might think about totally reposting this page, now that -- as you say -- first appearance/birth pages are so popular.  But anyway; major major congrats!!
