Commissioner Gordon by Ron Salas

James Gordon is one of my favorite supporting characters in fiction. I think that I really started to love him during Batman: the Animated Series where he really got to stand out as a character. While that show was airing, I was reading new Batman comics and discovering old stories like Year One, where I learned all about his beginnings in Gotham City. My favorite Gordon era is probably during No Man's Land and the years after when he was shot and retired. Those were some powerful stories. Also, the Turning Points miniseries which examined Batman and Gordon's relationship through the years is a must-read for any fan of the Batman mythos. I honestly was expecting Ron to draw Gordon standing in front of the Bat-signal for this commission, which is probably the way everyone thinks about him. But instead Ron pleasantly surprised me with a determined-looking Gordon walking towards what I'm sure is yet another horrible situation in Gotham. This whole piece works perfectly. The car, Gordon's tie and coat, the cigarette, and just Gordon's stride and determined look are all flawless. As usual, I could not be more impressed with Ron's talent.
