DescriptionWhen I first read this issue as part of my return to comics, I was also just starting to get into comic book artwork, so I kept thinking that it'd be cool to own this double page spread with the Fantastic Four and Dr. Doom. Over the years, I've been fortunate enough to pick up one of Mike's last covers from the Spider-Man/Fantastic Four miniseries as well as some pages from his run on FF, but it seemed like the big pieces (covers and splashes) were going to stay out of sight. Fast forward to this past summer, and I saw some pages from this issue show up in Heritage auctions, including this particular double pager. I'm very glad I was able to win the auction, and when I finally got it, I was just reminded of what Mike could do with a pencil. He truly was a talent we lost too soon, and I'm very fortunate to have as many pieces of his work as I do, including this latest spread.Social/Sharing |

Mike Wieringo's art was spectacular on FF. It brought me back to reading the title as well. FF vs. Dr. Doom, what more can you ask for on a FF page. I love it. Cheers! N.

Yes, indeed, Mike's art on this title was a major reason this run (rightly!) endures. You put two storytellers like Mark Waid and Mike Wieringo together and magic was made. Quite literally in this storyline, where Doom embraces the sorcerous part of his heritage to further frustrate the FF... A titanic pick up, Kin, from a landmark issue and launch of an unforgettable storyline. Brilliant work! Congrats on locking this beauty down!

Stupedous DPS from Fantastic Four #500 by the great Mike Wieringo. I love this double page splashj for its uniquely powerful portraits of the Fantastic Four. You see them all here, bunched together and scowling at the odious Doctor Doom. The hatred on their faces is palpable. Every one of them looks ready to strike their greatest enemy. I especially love the look on Ben Grimm's face, his eyes are angry but his mouth has gone slack, like he can't believe what Doom is saying now. It's seriously the best Fantastic Four splash I've seen in a while. Stunning pick-up, congratulations.

It's just the best image from one of the best comic runs of all time.
