DescriptionI have been fascinated by many things. One of them is Jose Luis Salinas' beautiful work on Cisco Kid. Strangely, if you search the CAF for Salinas Cisco Kid strips, the vast majority are dated within the first two years of the beginning of the strip... 1951 and 1952. There are a smattering of ones from later years, but not a lot. The other thing is that they are often bent at least once between panel borders. I was told that when Salinas passed away, the family in Argentina began selling originals and bent them to put them in envelopes for shipping; not sure if that is true or not. These two dailies are from my favorite story arc in those early stories. As the story began, Cisco met and had adventures with several beautiful ladies: Lucy the farmer's daughter; Red Flower, daughter of the Indian chief; Belle, the saloon singer and Boo-Boo, Pancho's fiance. In this sequence that ran during April to July 1952, Cisco is injured and all four of his amores come to nurse him to health with some comic results. In this daily, Lucy has put on her finest to visit Cisco and finds Red Flower waiting at his door, also. While no Cisco, this has great shots of Lucy and Red Flower. WHo needs Cisco with that? I need Cisco, that's who! When I decided to collect Cisco strips around 12 years ago, because of the fact that I already collected enough comic art at the time, I decided I would only collect what I felt to be "top tier" examples as far as content was concerned. Of course every collector has their own personal parameters of what would be considered a top tier example of any strip, but for me and Cisco, "pretty females" never even made it onto my list of parameters. It's interesting, because for almost any other strip that interests me, I view having a pretty/sexy female on an example as being a nice bonus. But for some reason, when it comes to Cisco I just don't care if a pretty gal is on a given daily.

I think it's because when I think of the old west, it's really just the dirt roads, horses and tough hombres that epitomizes western art in my mind. That's not to say I'd turn down an example with a pretty gal in it, it's just that having great images of Cisco in that beautifully embroidered black shirt takes precedence, and so does trying to get examples with native Americans, which strangely enough are actually pretty darn rare given that westerns are all about "cowboys and indians". Anyway, all that being said, and my content preferences aside Wally, this is a spectacular example insofar as the quality of the illustration is concerned. Just beautiful!
