DescriptionBuckler's first Marvel work was in 1972, with a story in "Where Monsters Dwell." He then did four issues of the Avengers (101-104). So this iconic two-pager from issue #102 (August 1972) is Buckler's third outing for Marvel. The issue itself is steeped in Avengers and X-Men history. The plot was suggested by Chris Claremont, picking up a point about the Sentinels from the original X-Men run (issues 57-59) before its cancellation (1970) and still 3 years out from the 1975 reboot of the X-Men. The issue also picks up a plot point from Avengers 79, where the Grim Reaper learns that the Vision's brain patterns were based on his brother Simon (Wonder Man) Williams. The storied history of the Vision and Scarlet Witch is all over the place. The Sentinels note that he is "an android of 3 decades vintage," and later, the retcon of Immortus's plan to get WandaVision together starts here. In the title splash, the Sentinels are returning from their attempt to destroy the sun in an extreme attempt to stop mutations (they headed out there at the end of X-Men 59). The other Buckler piece I have is also nice: his next to last cover for Marvel (Iron Man 196, 1985), featuring a rare example of him inking his own work. Social/Sharing |

Powerful Double Splash! And a nice tie to the Neal Adams page in X-men 59 where the Sentinels are flying into the sun (well, apparently, they changed their mind before it got too hot for them!).

Beautiful DPS and the start of an excellent storyline. A mutated Sentinel gaining sentience...
