Description

Frank Godwin (1889-1959). Tira diaria publicada el 22 de febrero de 1956. Tinta china sobre gruesa cartulina de dibujo. Toques de gouache blanco. Trama mecánica superpuesta a indicaciones de acuarela azul. Numerosos (aunque superficiales) cortes en la cartulina como resultado de aplicar la trama. La pieza tiene un sello en el reverso, puesto por el grabador, con una fecha (25/01/1956) anterior a la de publicación en casi un mes. Dimensiones: 50 x 16,50 cm. Firmada y fechada.

Aunque la tira pertenece a la etapa final de la serie (Godwin murió súbitamente de un infarto el 5 de agosto de 1959, a los 69 años de edad), sigue mostrando todo el esplendor de los viejos tiempos. En este sentido, es un magnífico testimonio del extraordinario arte de su autor, que fue dueño de un estilo realista fuertemente influido por los ilustradores James Montgomery Flagg y Charles Dana Gibson, y en el que el trabajo con los tramados resultaba fundamental. La serie se mantuvo abierta entre el 26 de enero de 1948 y finales de 1959, siendo Bob Lubbers el autor sustituto que terminó las dominicales para las dos últimas semanas y cerró la serie.
