Description

This is one of Bodé’s most famous pages, reproduced in dozens of books, on websites, blogs, wall paintings etc. One of the most beautiful and important works he ever created, a key piece and point of reference. First published in Cavalier Magazine, August 1971.

Vaughn Bodé: “The lizards are my brother Vincent and I floating on top of my wife. ... I started signing ‘Di Vaughn Bodé’ instead of ‘By Vaughn Bodé.’ The Di is Italian for ‘by.’ I did this from the April issue through the August issue. My mind was under such terrible pressures during these months I signed Di because I expected to commit suicide when I finished enough of my work to say I was ‘Done.’ My own father’s death caused me to do the heavy August issue about him. When Kenneth Roland Bodé died, he died instead of me, and my mind loved him, and calmed down about its imminent demise. I went back to signing ‘By’ instead of ‘Di.’”
