Description

("The Final Chapter!")

This is the Original Cover Art to JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #261 (April 1987) penciled and inked by Luke McDonnell. This issue features the END of the short-lived, controversial (fans either love it or loathe it!) "New" Justice League of America (a.k.a. Justice League: Detroit). JLA: Detroit was introduced in "Justice League of America Annual" #2 (1984) and the team's adventures ran for 29 issues (JLA #233 - #261). Aquaman led the team, along with The Martian Manhunter, Elongated Man, Zatanna, Steel, Gypsy, Vixen and Vibe.

After 27 years (1960 - 1987), JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA (Vol. 1) came to a close with this issue! The series was rebooted one month later as the hugely popular JUSTICE LEAGUE (sans "of America") by Keith Giffen, J.M. DeMatteis, Kevin Maguire and Terry Austin.

TRIVIA: This issue contains the annual Statement of Ownership. At the time of the cancellation in 1987, JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA was selling an average of 78,439 copies per month. Comics that sell half that number these days are considered smash hits! :-)
