Description

This is the original page 4 from Marvel Comics' WHAT IF? #15 by Greg Capullo and inked by Sam De La Rosa. The page measuring 11" by 17" was published in 1990. The story is "What if the Fantastic Four had lost the Trial of Galactus?"

The piece shows Galactus and his herald Nova (aka Frankie Raye). Nova is returning to Galactus, just as he is finishing devouring a planet. Frankie is trying to get Galactus to speak for Reed Richards at a vengeful trial where Richards is condemned for saving Galactus. Galactus feels no need to reciprocate the compassionate deed Reed and the FF did for him, so sends Frankie out to find him more worlds to feed upon, with no remorse.

Although I normally prefer covers, I really like this interior page. First of all it contains a full mini-story, it depicts Galactus as a God not caring for lesser life forms, it shows the difference in size between Nova and Galactus, and there are great close-ups of Galactus and Nova. Furthermore, three panels have full width and emotionally this piece works well at illustrating indifference (Galactus) and disappointment/shame (Nova).

Thank you - this page was not love at first sight, but after seeing it several times I liked it more and more. I then checked several dealers and CAF, and I found out that I had a really hard time finding a Galactus piece I liked better. So maybe an acquired taste? - Now it is indeed one of my favorite pieces. I'm a great fan of Galactus and when thinking about it, on several levels this piece captures him so incredibly well! Also Capullo really drew Galactus like I remember him - I'm too young for Kirby ;-)
