Description

A recent addition to my art collection. Despite the long run of this series, original art example of this strip are rare. The gags and characters in Lulu were both enduring and endearing. Little Lulu Moppat and her friend Thomas "Tubby" Tompkins were the main characters. These characters went on to be popular culture icons and were successfully merchandised. Tubby was the first mascot ever used by Kleenex.

The strip originated by Marjorie Henderson Buell began as single panels in the Saturday Evening Post as a replacement for the popular Henry strip by Anderson. Little Lulu was created specifically for this purpose. It ran from 1935 until 1945 where it switched to a comic strip format. Buell stopped drawing in 1947 and by the time the strip was syndicated in 1950, she had long left the artistic chores to Woody Kimbrell. This example is by Woody yet the strip retains the Marge signature.
