DescriptionI have already been very vocal in my appreciation of the Challengers: this series was both so incredibly thrilling and zany, with improbable villains (to say the least) and heroes who never took themselves too seriously! It was pure, undiluted 60's fun that could never have translated in the gloomier ages that were to follow, which is why the series declined quietly and disappeared.... never to be revived successfully (at least, to my eyes...). Topping that, of course, was the rock-solid art of Bob Brown who took over from Jack Kirby and took the Challs almost to the end of their road. And even if he was no King, I do think this has been his own Magnum Opus. While on that subject, the strong parallels between the FF's and the Challs have already been fully demonstrated. But, going further than the series' basic concepts, I've always felt it was going deeper than that and that the 2 kept following each other quite closely, at least until the mid 60's, when the King went into overdrive and unleashed the Galactus era... But, before that, the FF's also had their share of very improbable villains and storylines and, well, basically, all the fun that cemented the series for good in popular culture. Case in point: this page from Challengers 28 that was published in October 1962 depicts the adventures of the fearless quartet in Ancient Egypt due to some time-travel device. Does that ring a bell? Check FF 19, published a year later: you can even see a similar chariot-escape scene there... Well, of course, the comparison ends here, but, still, you won't stop me thinking how bad the Challengers need reevaluating! And, with a vintage large-art Bob Brown page now in my collection, it's going to be hard to convince me otherwise! Social/Sharing |

Fantastic work by Bob. Bob is one of the most underrated artists of the Silver age. I also enjoyed his later run on Superboy.
