Artwork Details

DescriptionI picked this page up from a recent exhibition in a Parisian Comic Art Gallery Show. Toppi is a unique voice in comic art. He had a style that was far less influenced than influential. It was unexpected but welcomed to find color on the back of the art. When held up to the light you get an idea of how the colors would have been applied at printing. I have seen this back coloring before with other Italian artists like Battaglia but no where else.I like this page for several reasons. The bear is awesome and reminds me of the Demon Bear by Bill Sienkiewicz. The female character also does remind me a bit of Dany Moonstone from the New Mutants. This would have been published before Bill was working in comics but perhaps this is where Billgot his influences from. The line work and "doodling" that is signature Toppi comes through nicely on this page. I have included a few panels so you can see some of the intricate details of the work as well as the colored back and how the effect works with the art being held up to light.

The pen work is lovely, but I'm especially drawn to the compressed sense of composition in each panel.

Toppi's work influenced quite a lot of artists, Sienkiewicz is one of them... stunning page!

Great page but the coloring on the back adds that little something special. Would have never guessed it was colored that way. Is the paint acrylic or maybe gouache? Is this on bristol? One would think painting it this way would warp the paper and make it more difficult to line up with reproduction. either way very cool.

I am not sure if that is bristol or not. I believe the paints are gauche. They sit on top of the paper on the back. I have seen this same thing done with other art from Italy. One of my Battaglia pages has the same process on it. Although the gallery mentioned it, I wasn't paying attention so when it arrived, it was a nice surprise. When I am showing others, I always pull it out and hold it up to the light. OA party tricks:)

Thanks for the reply Jeff. Looking at the printed image vs how it looks held up to the light one sees all the brush strokes, which is very cool, but I think they must have photographed the front and back of the art separately. Then in the printing overlaid the color and line art kind of like a blue line. Very cool, and must look great in person. Must be hard to decide how to frame it- does one back light it? Now that would be a cool trick! Looks great- always exciting to see your new purchases!
