Description

John Richard Flanagan is mostly forgotten these days, but from the 1920�s through the 1940�s, he was a leading illustrator. Born in Australia in 1895, he moved to the U.S. in 1916 on the advice of fellow Australian artist Norman Lindsey, who was one of his major influences. Arriving in New York, he began working for small press magazines, but by the end of 1916 he had cracked magazines such as Everybody�s and Pearson�s. In the 1920�s he did a lot of work for the slicks, particularly Collier�s, where he took over from Joseph Clement Coll -- following Coll�s death -- in illustrating the stories of Sax Rohmer, including those of the insidious Dr. Fu Manchu. In the mid-1930�s, his slick markets dried up and he moved to the pulps, primarily for Blue Book, where he would continue working until 1951. He passed away in 1964.

Tom Roberts, Lou Irmo and I are planning on eventually doing a book on Flanagan, when we can find the time! Many years ago I was fortunate enough to purchase one of Flanagan�s early sketch books, probably dating from the late teens or the early 1920�s. In addition to original drawings by Flanagan, the book also contains proofs glued in, as well as cut-out prints of illustrations by Lindsey. This is one of the images from the sketch book.

I would buy that book! I am REALLY enjoying your Flanagan postings. It's a shame he still is not recognized for some of his golden age DC covers.

Absolutely Stunning piece of work here. I love the way he shows the lighting on the rocks and off of the woman and yes, thank you for the education on an artist that I've heard the name but not familiar enough to realize how good he was. You definitely got my attention!
