I had seen Mary Perkins On Stage in the newspapers growing up and not paid much attention to it... save one story. But over the last decade I have fallen in love with the strip. There are only a few strips that deserve the "classic" title and this is one of them. The characters are fully developed, stories are more than intriguing (something impossible in today's newspaper strips) and the art is consistently great. Plus, Charles Pelto's Classic Comics Press has collected the strips (soon to complete the entire run) so you can read the stories unimpeded.

This is a daily from 1971. This was from a very long story arc beginning when Mary was chosen to play the role of a scandalous actress from the 1930's who allegedly killed her lover. After the movie is filmed, she then poses for a female artist in costume to paint the promotional poster only to learn that the painter knew and had fallen in love with her husband many years before. Her husband had barely noticed her when they worked together, but the unrequited love had sent the artist into a deep and long depression. Her husband held Pete to blame and did his best to discredit Pete through a series of "fake" interviews. Talk about a soap-opera!

Not only is there a great portrait of Mary on the phone in the middle panel, but a marvelous shot of her in costume in the first. Typical Starr detail and composition.

Yup, amazing attention to detail, particularly on the period costume Mary wears. A lovely early 70's example. So happy to see you sharing some of your On Stage art, Wally!
