I had seen Mary Perkins On Stage in the newspapers growing up and not paid much attention to it... save one story. But over the last decade I have fallen in love with the strip. There are only a few strips that deserve the "classic" title and this is one of them. The characters are fully developed, stories are more than intriguing (something impossible in today's newspaper strips) and the art is consistently great. Plus, Charles Pelto's Classic Comics Press has collected the strips (soon to complete the entire run) so you can read the stories unimpeded.

This is one of my favorite dailies from the story I first noticed back in 1966. If you remember, Batman began appearing on TV in January 1966 and was a big success. Being "timely", Starr did a story where the comic hero, Captain Virtue, was being made into a TV series. The lead was an unknown named Bernie Kibble and Mary Perkins was brought in to coach his acting. This daily shows Bernie (aka Captain Virtue) first meeting Mary. Here is big, strong Bernie (in costume) being completely intimidated when meeting Mary. Great faces and figures in this daily, for certain.

Starr draws superheroes! I liked this story arc as well - wonder if it inspired Neal Adams to start doing comic books?? Nice daily!
