Description

The origins of this piece go back to "Final Crisis: Requiem." At J'Onn's funeral, Gypsy is reminiscing with Ice and tells her, "He never let me beat him at chess. I always had to earn it. When I did win, he'd share his cookies with me."

As a big fan of both characters, and their father-daughter relationship, that moment stood out above all of the other great moments in that issue. When my own father passed away less than a year later, it became even more meaningful.

I thought it would be a great commission idea. But it was an odd idea, and not necessarily the most visually captivating scene, so I never knew who to approach with the idea and just talked about it a lot.

I knew my friend Chris was picking up a painting he had commissioned from Darrell at the 2013 Pittsburgh Comicon, so I stopped by his booth, and after Chris showed off his acquisition, he moved his painting aside and revealed this. I was stunned to say the least. Chris and I had gotten to know Darrell over the years, and after Chris explained the scene and why it mattered so much to me, Darrell said he knew he had to deliver something special.

I adore this piece, and am grateful that Chris took it upon himself to bring it to fruition.
