I am happy to have this stellar example of Ryan's work on Tumbleweeds. This is clean-line cartoon strip making at its best. And at 13x28 inches, you cannot beat the effect of seeing this in person.

Another coincidental but newsworthy "reconsider" from December, 1971.

After a series of convictions for possession of marijuana, poet and activist John Sinclair was sentenced to ten years in prison in 1969 after giving two joints to an undercover narcotics officer (immortalized as "ten for two" in the counterculture).

"The John Sinclair Freedom Rally" was held on December 10, 1971, at the University of Michigan, and was recorded as the documentary "Ten for Two: The John Sinclair Freedom Rally." Performers included John Lennon and Yoko Ono, David Peel, Stevie Wonder, Phil Ochs and Bob Seger, Archie Shepp and Roswell Rudd; poets Allen Ginsberg and Ed Sanders; and countercultural speakers including Abbie Hoffman, Rennie Davis, David Dellinger, Jerry Rubin, and Bobby Seale.

Three days after the rally, December 13, 1971, Sinclair was released from prison when the Michigan Supreme Court ruled that the state's marijuana statutes were unconstitutional. These events inspired the creation of Ann Arbor's annual pro-legalization Hash Bash rally, which continues to be held on April 1st each year.

Large art, HUGE art, big difference. What a beautiful example of Ryan's work. Thanks for the info on John Sinclair, too.
