DescriptionAs a part of working out plots for the Crusaders All-New Adventures covers I, as all good geeks do, started compiling lists of all Archie's super heroes. You wouldn't know it by looking at the 80's or any of the newer series but they actually have a whole mess of characters. So many that even including as many as I could in the Crusaders there were still lots left. As the idea of the Crusaders covers was to continue and "expand" the Archie universe it struck me that a companion series, like Marvel Spotlight, would be a perfect way to showcase the rest of their universe. Lots of bad series titles later the obvious hit me and Red Circle Spotlight it was.Archie had some wonderful pulp heroes back in the golden age like Gypsy Johnson and Captain Valor (think Indiana Jones and Doc Savage). When I came across a story in the Fly that introduced a "lost world" filled not just with dinosaurs but also giant apes I knew these two worlds had to meet! When I first saw Anthony's art it was him drawing dinosaurs so I was pretty sure I knew who to ask to do this one :) My favorite part of working out the cover with him was when I asked if he'd be interested he replied, "Kevin, you had me at dinosaurs." Loved triceratops as a kids and that those're the ones he went with here just makes this all the right kinds of fun. He was also kind enough to post a pin-up of our heroes for the issue. Most kind of him! An extra note of thank to Chris Ivy who went above and beyond to turn this one into such a great looking cover. Taking Anthony's piece and turning it into an old photo is a great idea. As always, I hope Crusaders fans approve :) Original size 11x17 ------- In This Issue ... Captain Valor recounts an adventure he and Gypsy Johnson had during the days of WWII. Asked to rescue the crew of a downed courier jet that had been traveling across Africa the two soldiers of fortune soon find themselves on a very different kind of mission. Stumbling across a world lost to time, a world of living dinosaurs and giant gorillas, our heroes find that they've not only got to rescue the crew but are forced to struggle to just stay alive! This Issue's Cover ... Gypsy Johnson and Captain Valor explore Africa's Lost World. Social/Sharing |
