Description

Baby Dumpling was given a kiddy car for his first Christmas in 1934. For the next few months, he is shown riding it with some frequency. This is the third example.

Not only are Blondie originals from this period very scarce, few were even reprinted for later generations to read until 2012, when IDL Publishing came out with their second volume of Blondie reprints, covering the years 1933 to 1935. This daily strip was an exception, since it was one of a handful of early Baby Dumpling strips which were included in the 1958, 25th anniversary Blondie reprint book. Since Blondie was first published on 8 September 1930, it's hard to explain why the silver anniversay of the strip was celebrated with the publication of this book in 1958 instead of 1955, but it really doesn't matter to me. I bought a copy of the book at auction when I began to collect Blondie Hunger Strike dailies in 1985, and I have wanted this particular original ever since. Even though Baby Dumpling was a rather shallow character compared to the young Skeezix, who was the young protagonist in Frank King's Gasoline Alley, which had become a family strip about 14 years before Blondie gave birth, almost miraculously, to Baby Dumpling, there were many moments when Chic Young came up with charming story elements such as the one seen here. I never dreamed that this original still existed, let alone that it would turn up about 31 years after I placed it high on my wish list of comic strip art -- that list, btw, is in my head to make it a little more difficult for family and friends to argue that I really just want everything that pops up which catches my fancy. They're often right, of course, but not when it comes to this particular original.
