DescriptionThis is far from the most striking page, as it lacks recognizable characters or any in costume (speedster guru Max Mercury is in plainclothes here), but I picked it up for a song as part of a package deal after winning a lot of other pages on eBay. One thing the page does reflect well is the goofy tone of the Impulse series. There's a playful, satirical tone in writer William Messner-Loebs' dialogue throughout this page. Another unintentionally amusing element of the dialogue here is Helen's use of a bogus "Moon Girl" backstory. This page was crafted in 1998, and I acquired it 18 years later, at a time when Marvel, not DC, is publishing a well-received title called Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur. The same holds true with the art. Craig Rousseau's elongated, cartoony figures are clearly not meant to be taken seriously. The oddball Dr. Morlo design also conveys that lighter tone, not to mention a possible inspiration from Dr. Zaius from Planet of the Apes. I do like the subtle cues the line artists use in Panel 2 to convey Max's speed. Furthermore, the word balloons in that panel, made up of broken lines to convey whispering, are done so simply with some whiteout over a normal balloons outline. Another eye-catching element is Rousseau's use of the gutter-breaking figure in Panel 4. Such overlapping elements have become a tried-and-true method of comics storytelling, and while sometimes it can go awry, this isn't one of those cases. I always prefer it when the lettering is done right on the board, and that's the case here. Of note is the fact one can make out some faint pencil guidelines for the letter forms behind the word balloon in Panel 4 (though it may not be visible in this scan). Other vintage goodness to be found on this inexpensive page are the traditional copyright stamp on the reverse and the dual page notations at the top right. This is Page 8 of the story, but Page 10 of the final product, with ads. Social/Sharing |
