Love the page! I just acquired a board from the same issue, and it's one of the most treasured in my collection.
It's funny you should mention the depiction of Risk's face in the first panel, Gal. Looking at it again, it made me think of what I believe was probably Jurgens' strongest collaboration: that with inker Art Thibert on Adventures of Superman, long before the "Death of Superman" storyline. Rapmund does an excellent job over Jurgens' pencils on this page. I've found his more recent work with Jurgens to be rougher, edgier in tone (which is fine and sometimes is called for, depending on the nature of the story being told).
Thanks, Lloyd. I haven't been updating the blog as much as I should have this year, but I'm trying to turn that around. I also want to write more pieces about collecting original art (there are a couple on the blog under "Features," if you want to look for them). You may have noticed I reorganized my CAF gallery, specifically taking some cues from you by setting up themed gallery rooms. Thanks for the idea!
FYI, this is a piece from the early 1980s. I've got a Jonni Thunder page too... gotta love Dick Giordano's work.
An excellent point, Gal. Breeding was a big part of the Superman creative team in the early 1990s, when it hit a peak of popularity with the Death of Superman.
I'm incredibly jealous. This and the many other History pages by Perez you have posted are stunning -- some of the finest Perez work I've seen on CAF. It also doesn't hurt that they're inked by Karl Kesel. I think their styles are quite complementary, and it's a shame they didn't work together more often.
Thanks, Anthony, especially for the comment about my description of the page and Broderick's work. I really wish CAF members would take the time to write a little bit about the pieces in their collections.
What's really great about this Balent Catwoman splash is that is miraculously doesn't focus the reader's attention on her boobs! :) The focus is on the character her, not her curves, making it a much rarer Balent piece. Nice.
I recently picked up four pages from Khoi as well, including two from the same issue of DD. A friend of mine was going to get in on the action, but the one page he wanted was this one, which you apparently scooped up before we could call dibs! :)
James, your Spider-Girl splash is a great page, and I agree wholeheartedly with your comments about Al Williamson.
The inking detail comes as no surprise, since it's by Al Williamson. Thanks for the comment, Dave!
FYI, it's Lockjaw, not Lockheed. Lockheed is Kitty Pryde's pet dragon. :)
The tape and rough shape of the stat at the top of the page have always marred my appreciation of this page, but your comment is on the mark. Immonen's use of the 16-panel grid (turned into a 13-panel grid) is a great example of a tried and true comics storytelling method.
One of the things I loved about Q&C was the diversity of visual styles it offered, and it introduced us to a lot of stellar talent -- Steve Rolston, Leandro Fernandez, Jason Shawn Alexander and so many more.
Thanks, Frank. I forgot to point out there are coloring notes in the left margin for the yellow and green ring constructs. Those notes didn't quite come through in the scan.
Thanks, Anthony. I know collectors often seek splashy, action-oriented pages, but I honestly enjoy dense, dialogue-driven scenes.
I honestly don't think I've read the issue in question. I picked the page up because it was such a steal. When I get my comic collection out of storage and organized, I'll have to check if I have the comic book or not. And if not, I'll have to track a copy down. :)
Thanks, Gal. It's a striking image, for sure, but whenever I look at this spread, I think of the other pages I traded to get it and kick myself. And I'm not saying what I traded; I'm a little embarrassed at what I gave up.
Definitely a great series, Patrick, I agree, one deserving of a wider audience.
Thanks, Felix! Machlan's finishes are quite sharp. I'm surprised he and Byrne didn't work together more often. Their styles are quite compatible.
Thanks, Frank. I apologize for the choppiness of the scan (Had to do it in two parts and piece them together).
