Description

Heritage in my opinion has gone overboard attributing every cover that is a gold key/whitman to George Wilson. Look at the paintings I have attached. I don't think they are Wilsons. Many of the prices reflect this as they often go for half of what a normal Wilson goes for and they cause confusion in the market. Doesn't Heritage have a duty to scrutinize these paintings a little bit better?

To the owners of these pieces, I would say to you, they are still wonderful pieces(and you got some damn fine deals, by the way!), but Heritage is misleading everyone when they as the "experts" should know better. If you want me to take your piece down I will do so immediately. My point is in no way to degrade your painting. I wish I had all of them!

But I count 252 Gold Key cover art pieces(excluding the older Dell/Gollub era), that are still in existence and have seen the light of day, and of those I believe 155 of them are by Wilson. That leaves you with roughly a 60 percent chance that you will have a Wilson, based on a reliance on Heritage. So 4 out of 10 pieces of art that Heritage are saying were done by Wilson were not. Further, I show approximately 900 comic covers from this time with approximately 500 being Wilsons, which is about the same average, 6 out of 10 are Wilsons.

Signs of a Wilson are: In Wilson's own words: "Oh, yeah, I was strictly a realist...", which I take to mean: detail in hands and faces and small detailed pictures within the picture; dots in the paintings; loves blues and purples and red whole backgrounds same color. Much movement. Looks non-hurried with often large faces on the painting. You can feel the feet on the ground and the poses are natural. If it doesn't have the feel of a Wilson you will know it. His paintings give off a certain feel that just shows quality. And you must not necessarily judge the painting by the printed comic cover. Much detail is lost in the printing process. I welcome anyone else's thoughts on these points. These are just my impressions.

And this is in essence what makes collecting Wilson's so rewarding. You come to know his work and as Gold Keys are almost never signed, it is a journey just to determine who did the work. But when you see the art in person and feel the art come alive, you realize what a master Mr. Wilson was and how lucky you are to have the actual art used to make so many wonderful covers.

Caveat Emptor but it's worth it when you find one.
