"I am the old one. The one whose eyes have seen so much they should be blind. Whose heart has felt such love, such joy, such hatred, such pain that it should long since have broken in two.

Death ate me, chewed me up, spit me out. Age caressed me, seduced me, abandoned me. Time looked at me and shook its head; in pity, in awe.

I am the old one. I have seen history unfold; seen humanity march blindly into the sea: too stupid to know that it's drowning, too proud to cry out for help.

Once I had compassion for them; once i cared too much. But now I see that compassion is a useless thing. It weakens a man; makes him tired. And there is no one on this earth more tired than I am.
