It does when it refers to the fact that it is original from the time period, and not a more recent modern reproduction. But thank you for your comment.
It's without question the best Mysterio page I've ever seen, although I'm a bit biased! Wonderful to see it alongside so many classic villain pieces and in such a great collection. Always makes me feel good when a great piece winds up with the right person. Enjoy it John!
I mean, who hasn't had that feeling? Not the “I might be done now.” feeling. Because almost no addicted collector is gonna be with you on that one! The feeling that Buddy and the chicken/rooster have. I feel like this cover is a metaphor for my entire life! Wow, I got deep there. Didn't know I was gonna have an existential crisis in the comments section of CAF. Oh, and Bolland and Capriati are an unbeatable team. They should play doubles!
This is wonderful - both the piece itself, and the story of how it came together! It's also such a unique take. You have moments where you feel like you've seen every kind of image of a character, and then you see something that makes you go, "Well, I haven't seen that before!". Just great all around on all aspects of this, and big congrats on getting a piece that is obviously very special for you.
The perspective and the detail on this piece is quite simply amazing. A really mind-blowing piece, perfectly created! Huge congrats!
I told you I think it's a perfect iconic image of Venom, and I stand by that! I also think the page is in the hands of the right collector. Congrats, and enjoy it Steve!
Excellent detective work, Batman would be proud! Thank you so much for the help, Wesley, I really greatly appreciate it!
Wow, probably one of the best Neal Adams commissions I've ever seen! Every bit as good as a published piece, and all the more special that you were able to get this, especially since his passing. Such a perfect dynamic pose, he really went all-out on this one and it shows!
It's such a great page, and it's great to see it in such an outstanding collection of first appearance art! I enjoyed the TV series too, and had hoped they would have given them a few more seasons, but I thought they did a really good job with the story in the time they were given. It all began right here in this issue, and I couldn't think of a better caretaker for this piece of history, so congrats and enjoy it Jordan!
It's terrible that you had to go through that, but amazing that you did actually get the pages. It's a great DPS, so I can understand the thrill of victory to "get it back" after having it taken from you. Years ago, a Superman DPS coming to me was stolen by UPS. Ten years later, I saw it and bought it, so believe me, I know the feeling. The piece had a slice in it (I'm guessing from a UPS worker slicing the package open), but even with a rip line in it, I was still glad to get it, all those years later. So big congratulations to you, I think I know how good you feel on this one, both because of how awesome the artwork is, and also because of what it took to get it!
Wow, gorgeous piece! Love the contrast between what is depicted at the top in the fountain, and then Vampi bathing in blood at the bottom. Both parts are great, and they go together so well to make a truly stunning piece. Congrats!
That's wild! What a great and imaginative piece! Big congrats. Also, I can't tell you how much I love the fact that it's on a mug too!
There's so many great things I could say about this page, but I'm just going to focus on one thing: This is one of the most 3-D pages I've ever seen in my life! And I mean like 3-D without the 3-D glasses. Just astounding how he's able to truly make it feel like the characters are leaping off the page right out at you, especially Starfire! What a master. Huge congrats on what is truly a magnificent George Perez page!
It's a perfect iconic Cap image, and the fact that not only is it personalized, but he stylized the M as you mentioned, is wonderful. It's a small thing like that which seems to show the care and attention he put into everything he did for the fans.
There's so much to love here. The cover itself is amazing. How many times does the Hulk get dwarfed on one of his own covers by a much larger beast, who then also has an even (slightly) larger looking creature behind? Nobody look behind you! I'm gonna have to break out the old Marvel Universe Handbooks and see what the height and stats are on Wendigo and Sasquatch! But obviously as great as the cover is, the story is even better. It probably goes without saying, but is there anything better in any collecting hobby than landing The Holy Grail? Given the circumstances, I feel like the asking price is justified. Also, the fact that your first comic book store was named "Excalibur" - how great is that? Big congrats all around, and I enjoyed the explanation of just what The Holy Grail can and should mean.
I think the first piece of George Perez art I owned was a Deadly Hands of Kung Fu page. This is a great page, and you can see that even early on, he was already awesome.
What an awesome DPS! Killer depictions, and the fact that it's a DPS means there's enough room to properly give each character the right amount of space across both pages. Love the way it's set up. Big congrats!
That's incredibly cool! I love the depiction and the expression, and the color work is just amazing. Normally I'd say "congrats" for one, but it seems like this is congrats for both of you! I apologize in advance for saying you'll both probably shout "Let's Dance" well into your "Golden Years" everytime you see it.
Once upon a time, about 15 years ago, in another life, I owned Page 3, where she first asks him for his library card. While yours is no doubt the far superior page, I still can't shake the feeling that selling that page is one of the great mistakes of my life. Sometimes I look for that page in one of my portfolios, only to realize it... well... you know.
That's ridiculous. How many artists can have a convention sketch that good? And it's just pencil too, but looks like a fully finished published piece. I will echo what Eric and Gal said in terms of both the amazing detail in the facial expression, and also that it's definitely one the best, most iconic depictions of the character I've ever seen. Excellent job snatching it out of the portfolio!
That's one of the best Romita Jr. Punisher images I've seen! Huge image with a perfect inset panel at the bottom that makes you wonder what's gonna happen next. A killer Punisher page (no pun intended)! Big congrats on scoring it.
Such a cool piece. Love the composition, love the mid-air poses, and on top of everything else, it's huge! What a perfect Spider-piece! Major congrats!
Wow, such a truly awesome, classic cover! For those who are familiar with the old Atlas era/pre-superhero covers, seeing those monsters makes your brain instantly picture each of those classic old Silver Age covers (somehow all at once!?!? Or is that just me?). And that Hulk image front and center, just amazing! Wait, where's Monsteroso? Just kidding. So much to love about this cover. Huge congrats on acquiring it, and the excellent preservation work to keep this gem looking great for years to come!
A fantastic addition to what was already an outstanding Colleen Doran collection!
I started out reading comics before I ever knew you could collect artwork. And even though I mostly stopped collecting comics when I started collecting artwork, I still read artwork pages like I was reading them in a comic. It is very possible this is the first page I've ever come across where I actually tried to IGNORE the text on the page, and just look at the artwork by itself. Not because there's anything wrong with the text/dialogue. But the visual storytelling is so astonishingly good, you don't even need to see what the Surfer is saying. Look at the depictions of his expressions as you move through the page. That's a true master artist at work. Starting right with that first panel, you FEEL the tortured angst that is such a hallmark of the Surfer's character, and then the determination as he sets forth. Man, I miss John Buscema. I know others have said it, but I'll just agree, if it's not the best Surfer panel page out there, it's darn near the top of the list. While it probably goes without saying, I'd be kind of a jerk if I didn't say Huge Congrats on being the owner of this remarkable page.
I, for one, will sleep better tonight knowing there is a Masked Avenger out there somewhere, righting wrongs, and correcting injustice wherever he may find it.
(And if it turns out you're not wearing a mask, and are actually just hanging out at home typing comments behind a keyboard somewhere - that's cool too.)
Stunning. It's just so powerful, such a remarkable example of everything that made Kirby "The King". A page like this to me transcends the art form, and is the kind of example you would show to "non-comics people" at an art gallery or show to demonstrate everything comics (and comic artists) can be. Huge Congrats on this (and the other Eternals pages)!
This page has one comment in 15 years??? It's one of the best She-Hulk pages I've probably ever seen! A grave injustice I am prepared to correct right now by doubling the total number of comments. Probably overlooked given all the other incredible pieces in your fantastic collection!
Wonderful! Love the piece itself, and I also LOVE the picture of Stan signing it. The expression on his face is priceless! Congratulations on all aspects of this (the artwork and the experience)!
I agree that having the page broken up makes it more affordable, given where Wrightson pages are priced at this point, but the additional benefit to having individual panels is that it really does make you realize just how great an artist he was. I think seeing pieces that are individual panels by Frazetta or Wrightson really does illustrate (pardon the pun) just what astonishing talents they were. It's the mark of a truly great artist that you can have a single panel stand on its own the way these pieces do. Congrats on this great pickup. It's a stunning, haunting piece, and the rhyming text is a perfect touch too!
Wow, that might be one of the best pieces I've seen showing any Spidey moving through the city! I love the motion of it, and the 3-D feel of that last huge Spidey image coming right out at the reader, and breaking the panels!
Wow, what a page! There have been so many encounters over the past nearly 3 decades with these 3 characters, but to have a page like this from this early on at the very beginning, and with that killer image at the bottom, is truly special. Love the story behind acquiring it too! I know as a general rule everyone goes with a cover over a page, but in this case, you wound up with one heck of a page! So I wouldn't feel too bad about Lyle getting the cover. I think you did pretty good! Big congatulations on making this great find and pickup!
Persistence personified! (I meant you, in acquiring the page, although I guess if someone thought I was talking about The Hulk, that kinda works too!) What a great, perfect image showcasing the rage and brute strength of the character. A perfect Hulk page! Big congrats on finally scoring it!
That's truly outstanding. It's a perfect representation of why Frazetta has always been considered one of the best (and for many, THE best) comic artists ever. To have a single panel be that great, and be something where the average viewer wouldn't know if it was intended as comic art, illustration art, or fine art (since it could easily work as all 3), is a truly special thing to have. So I'll just echo what others have said about it being the perfect choice for your avatar, and say big congrats on acquiring this stellar piece all those years ago.
It's such a wonderful and powerful Batman image. And also so imaginative to have Batman casting the Bat symbol in that way. Everything about it is great - the perspective, with Batman looming high above, seemingly towering over the citizens of the city, the execution, even the small bats flying around! As a Bat-fan, this is one of those pieces where even though I love it, knowing it's in the collection of someone who really enjoys it and appreciates it, keeps me from getting too jealous! Big congrats on acquiring it!
That's great! I will resist the urge to make any jokes or comments about the previous price, and just say it's a great piece that is jam-packed with characters and detail. I've always loved the layout and the fact that it's a cover that has the look of panels on a page which blend together and works so well with this image. Huge congrats on scoring this grail!
Such a great page! A treat to not only have a page from a classic saga, but a title splash with the characters all together, and that lettering. It looks so great framed like that, and I think it's also helpful from the standpoint of when people get jealous that you have the page and we don't, we can all at least feel good about the fact that it's on the wall and being enjoyed. Big congrats on both the page itself, as well as the excellent framing/display!
Yes! So Good! I think I like this better than many of the Sienkiewicz pieces I have seen.
Without question one of the most iconic images of Wolverine of all-time, and a case where an interior page image is so large and impressive and perfectly drawn that it's superior to most any cover image. And I haven't even mentioned the text, which is not only one of those profound moments for Logan, but something that can resonate with any of us at any time. Love the page, love the write-up on you acquiring it, just magnificent all-around and huge congrats!
Yeah, that's a good one! (I am a master of understatement)
A very personal, heatfelt, thoughtful, and moving tribute. I know the world moves so fast these days, and everyone moves on so quickly from one piece of news to the next, but I don't think the loss will be forgotten anytime soon. I realize that as someone who was a Black Panther fan "before it was cool", when the whole world hadn't yet fully taken notice of the character, it might be that much worse for you, particularly given the promise of the first movie and thinking of what might have been. The cover is a beautfiul piece that makes a fitting tribute, bested only by what is written below it. And I certainly hope everyone takes to heart what you said about taking stock of what's truly important in life, as that perspective is so important. It's all very eloquently expressed, and tributes like this one will certainly help keep the memory of Chadwick alive and burning brightly for many years to come.
Thank you Eric. I'm just so sorry for the terrible pain and suffering you and your family have had to endure, and I certainly understand why you have the Stand Up To Cancer icon as your avatar. Chadwick’s passing was yet another reminder (not that anyone needs a reminder) that for all the technological progress and medical breakthroughs that humans have achieved, we are still so limited and so vulnerable to this terrible affliction. I appreciate your very kind words, and know that unfortunately you appreciate more than most people how this affects those both young and old, as well as their loved ones. I think we all just hope and pray for the day when mankind finally triumphs once and for all over "The Big C". My best likewise to you and yours, and Thank You again.
Thank you so much for the help Kelvin! Greatly appreciate it!
