Description

SOLD JULY 2017 FOR $1,108!

12.25x14.75" frame contains vintage mat w/7x9" opening reveals original ink and watercolor art featuring anthropomorphic insignia image of an aggressive-looking Rockfish mascot, who wears a sailor's cap and boxing gloves. The fish stands in front of an anchor. Art is by Disney artist Hank Porter, who has signed "© Walt Disney" at bottom right. Mat also has hand-lettered text, reading "The Rock - Submarine Base - Pearl Harbor 1945." This refers to the World War II Pacific Submarine Force, which was based in Pearl Harbor, HI and tasked w/playing havoc on Japanese shipping and troop transports. Of note, the Pacific Submarine Force included a submarine named the USS Grouper, which was named after the fish, itself another name for Rockfish. A similar picture of this mascot can be found on page 52 of the 1992 book "Disney Dons Dogtags" Walton Rawls. As stated in the book, "The Disney Designers Had To Use Fertile Imaginations To Come Up With Appropriate Finny (And Funny) Heraldry. The Problem Was Further Compounded By A Tidal Wave For Insignias From One Very Large Class Of Naval Vessels That Was, By Custom, All To Be Named For Fish: The Submarine." Art is evenly aged but o/w Exc. Great piece of Disney original art from their contributions to World War II.
