Description

There are many reasons people buy comic book related artwork. Recently I was able to purchase the cover to The All New All Different Avengers #5 illustrated by Michael Cho (from Albert Moy). It is a wonderful composition. Mr. Cho's approach is unique, rich and stylized. I did not buy the art because it graced the cover of a comic book, but rather it was made into a t-shirt. Several of Mr. Cho's Marvel covers were made into full-bleed t-shirts. These shirts are colorful and attractive, many of them with classic Marvel characters like Spider-man or The Vision.

Last year, 2016, on the first day of the San Diego Comic Con, my son Michael wore the New Avengers t-shirt. It was a great day. We attended Preview Night and were also able to get tickets to the premiere of Star Trek Beyond. We all loved the movie. The whole day was a great memory.

On the last day of Comic Con 2016 we received a call, that evening, from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. They had a kidney for my son. He had been listed for a kidney transplant for several months. We flew from San Diego to Minnesota. My son was transplanted but unfortunately the new kidney failed. For the next six months he fought infections and other health issues. Originally Michael received a heart transplant at the age of eight months. This past October we celebrated his twentieth heart birthday. On January 26th of this year, 2017, Michael died waiting for a joint heart-kidney transplant. He was three weeks shy of his twenty-first birthday.

Because of the gift of a heart, given by a family in their grief, my son was able to live twenty wonderful years. He had finished two years of college at Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles. He even wrote about his heart transplant for his school newspaper: http://www.laloyolan.com/opinion/my-life-was-saved-by-an-organ-donor/article_0b6cccfa-cf1e-5020-a7ff-2a9235da3576.html?mode=jqm

Michael loved his Avengers shirt. We decided to have the original art framed and then framed photos of Michael wearing the shirt in San Diego last summer during Preview night. You can see the images below.

Our family would ask that you consider being an organ donor. The gift of life is so very precious and important.

Thank you.

Thanks for sharing your story, Dave. It's incredibly heartbreaking, but I'm glad to know that the baby who sadly seemed to be living on borrowed time still had the strength to fight through all his issues and become the young man you are so proud of. My condolences to you and your family on such a difficult thing to go through, and my congratulations on acquiring what is likely the single most significant piece of original comic book art you'll ever own. It's a great tribute to your son.

Dave. As a hospital chaplain at both a children's hospital and a Level 1 Trauma for over 12 years and sitting with folks on the worst days of their lives, I can only echo your generous and gracious words. When that critical time comes, Be A HERO, donation changes and saves lives. I am profoundly sorry for your loss but I also applaud your courage. The art is beautiful but Michael imbued it with meaning.

I know you didn't post what you did for sympathy, but I have a small son and it broke my heart. I agree that Michael Cho is a fabulous talent and that this is a wonderful piece of art.
