PWUAAAAH!

A peculiarly disgusting DPS by Bryan for Vertigo's Hellblazer, featuring the King Kon-Sten-Tyn, the ancient ancestor of magus gumshoe John Constantine. It's a weird tale by Jamie Delano, which must have made very little sense to Vertigo's American readers, but I loved its Dark Age accuracy, and the abject mucus, maggots, filth and grime of Bryan's detailed art - detail that was largely obliterated by the muddy colours. Some artists are ALWAYS best in Black and White.

Bryan also worked on Sandman and Batman for DC, but it seems to me that his art was always constricted and constrained by the standard US comics 10.5" x 17" page. And editor's suggestions don't help...It was soon after this that he embarked on the creator-owned The Tale One Bad Rat, and he's not looked back since...

Congrats! I’ve got the page right before this spread, and they are incredible to view up close: intricate hatching, not a stray mark or correction, with the white-out used only for effects. Some of Talbot’s best work outside the Arkwright books, IMO.
