Description

Acrylic on board. 19 x 11.25 in. Circa 1967, I expect.

Used as the cover of the very first Gene Wolfe book, Operation ARES. Published in 1970. However, the painting has the original title, The Laughter at Night, which is what Gene Wolfe was calling the book in 1967 when he sold it to Berkley Books. It was subsequently changed.

So, there is a bit of a mystery as to when the painting was actually painted, but I am leaning towards 1967.

A great piece of history in this painting for Gene Wolfe or Lehr fans...
