DescriptionSpectacular work by the always-amazing Ian Richardson! Now - this needs a little bit of explanation: Basically, I've been toying with doing some commissions with a 'continuation' of the Squadron for some time now, but I wanted a hook to tie them together. So this series is based on the following three premises: - first, that Roy Thomas got to continue writing the adventures of the All-Stars after Crisis; - second, that he was able to use ALL the characters available to DC at that point (the DC and AA characters from the 1940s, including those supposedly wiped out by CoIE - hence the appearance of Green Arrow at bottom right; plus the 1970s and 80s-created pseudo-Golden-Age stars such as Steel, the Dannette Reilly Firebrand, Amazing Man, etc; plus the Quality heroes; plus the entire Fawcett roster - though none appear here; plus the then-newly-acquired Charlton wartime action heroes Judomaster and Tiger); and - third, all of these commissions will be based on the covers of comics in which Roy has a credit as writer, plotter or scripter. More to follow in the coming months, based on (among others) the covers of issues of the Avengers, Invaders, X-Men, Sub-Mariner, Daredevil, and many others... EDIT: It was recently pointed out to me that this one (as the first of the All-Star Squadron covers I had done) doesn't have a storyline attached, unlike later episodes. So... In issue #74, Ibis The Invincible detected a mystic influence affecting his fellow heroes and turning them against each other. Temporarily shielding them with the magic of his Ibistick, the Squadron members track down their old foe Wotan, who has tapped into the powers of the legendary Medusa Masks (which at this point are still buried, as seen in Showcase #56) to turn them against each other. Wotan continues to pit hero against hero, but some of the magically powered members - Ibis, Sargon, Zatara and Dr Occult - are able to disrupt the flow of power from the Medusa Masks for long enough for Wotan to lose control - and it's Doctor Fate, Wotan's oldest foe (and ironically no longer in possession of his full magic powers), who delivers the final knockout blow which takes the villain down.
