Description

A fantastic piece of art by the creator of Green Lantern. I met Mr. Nodell in Tulsa in the 90's at a comic show. He had practically no one at his table the whole show! I approached him and made small talk for a bit and went through the portfolios he had on the table. I picked out an item and asked the price. He said, "Oh! Those are originals! The prints are much cheaper." I knew what I was looking at and asked again what he wanted for the roughly 8x11 watercolored sketch. He said, "If you're sure.....$75 but the print is just $5*." $75 was all he wanted! I was giddy and couldn't pay him fast enough. I remember both of us being very excited.

I remember that he looked like he was having the time of his life anytime he was approached, grinning and displaying his art and a Golden Age Green Lantern statue prototype. I really believe that the statue was from Randy Bowen but it was very similar to the DC Direct version released years later. It was larger and the character rose from a wood base. I'm guessing that it was never produced, but Mr. Nodell was obviously very proud to have it on his table.

There are very few Golden Age creators around. I wish that those are still able would come out and hit at least a local show. I don't think they know how respected and revered they are within this hobby.

*$5 is a guess, I really don't remember the price. I'm sure it was between $5-10, though.
