Description

A few years ago, my friend Bob Weinberg and I picked up this interior by Virgil Finlay. From the October 1946 issue of Famous Fantastic Mysteries, it illustrated Clemence Dane's "Third Person Singular." What made this purchase unusual was that the art was accompanied by the original letter from the editor of FFM, Mary Gnaedinger, to well-known SF fan Thyril L. Ladd, which she had sent along with this piece of art back on September 27, 1946. In the letter, she mentions earmarking the next Finlay cover for Ladd. Once again demonstrating that no one thought SF pulp art was worth much back in the day -- but times have changed!

Really nice, Doug! Beautiful detail on this one. And I particularly love the accompanying letter—can’t get enough of such great glimpses into the history...
