DescriptionHere is a fun, action and character packed daily from late in Caniff's tenure on his well loved Terry and the Pirates series. In this exciting daily, we have a piece that sums up the last years of Terry very nicely in a single example with war, aviation and romance themes. It is also a great daily in terms of the story-line. Here we have Terry and Hu Shee pinned down with nicely rendered silhouette images of the battle going on all around them. We move in to a very dynamic panel of a the aerial dogfight going on above. Then we get to an iconic image of the Dragon Lady and Pat Ryan behind a machine gun in the heat of battle worrying about Terry. The final panel we have Jane Allen, one of Terry's later love interests...a sleeping beauty awakens. For many of the later years of the strip, Pat was out of the picture but they were reunited for a short time before Caniff handed over the reigns of the strip for this one last adventure. This will be the last time Terry and Pat appear together and they never did reconnect during or after this battle and in fact that third panel is the last image of Pat in the entire series. It is also the last time the Dragonlady and Pat are together ending the story of the long standing relationship between the two. This story-line also marks the end of the war years for Terry and Caniff and we go onto the short post-war years that Caniff did before Wunder took over. The aviation theme was always prominent in Terry and would later go on to be the basis of the Steve Canyon character. George Wunder would take over Terry but wanted to put his own stamp on the strip so other than Terry, Hot Shot and a few early appearances of the Dragonlady, he would leave all the other characters Caniff created behind.I think the layouts of this daily are also worthy of a bit appreciation. The first and third panel have the lush foliage but the way the characters are staged makes you focus back on the second panel and the bigger picture of the battle going on. This design gives pause to the end of the first 3 panels as you transition to the back at base story with Jane. Telling a story, telling multiple stories, transitioning between stories are all things Caniff managed to seemingly do without effort but there is a lot going on that wasn't meant to be noticed to make this happen and only closer analysis do you start to see how much thought and control is behind every episode of this flowing epic. Every panel is fantastic...but, to me, that first one is really something special.

A great example of Caniff at the top of his form. You commentary is also on target and well said.
