DescriptionMy most coveted OHOTMU illo...finally in possession! As a few of you already know, Thundra is my all-time favorite gal in comics but pre-90s artwork featuring her prominently doesn't turn up very often so...I was very lucky to get this particular rarity given how challenging this hobby can be at times. Still trying to believe this piece is actually here in my hands... :)Drawn 14.25" tall on 11" x 16"...pretty big! This is also my first (and probably only ever) piece drawn by the legendary John Romita. As far as I know, he only drew Thundra twice for publication...the other piece was the cover of SPIDEY SUPER STORIES #24. No idea why he's assigned to do this Handbook entry as the series had most of the character illustrations drawn by the artist well associated with this or that character but this isn't a complaint because Jazzy John really did a fantastic job here! I also added the published image for reference. ADDENDUM: Kurt Busiek said "Since you mentioned it at that page: Thundra was almost certainly assigned to Romita because she’s a Femizon, and while John didn’t create Thundra he did co-create the Femizons." Very plausible since John did draw the very first Femizons tale in SAVAGE TALES #1 in 1971 and that predates FANTASTIC FOUR #129 (Thundra's 1st appearance) by almost 2 years. Super cool! Once every thousand years a piece of artwork comes along that so magnificently reflects the most profound underlying passions and yearnings of the cultural zeitgeist, it transcends our abilities to grasp its emotional depth and meaning.... it vaults the banal temporal concerns of men, with our daily strivings, to take its place among the enduring masterpieces of high Art that illuminate the soul of the human condition itself, and define our striving for something lasting, a torch of hope shining triumphantly against the howling vortex of emptiness that bespeaks our own humbling mortality. This Romita Thundra, which has propitiously arrived in our own lifetimes, to our indescribable delight and gratitude, is just such a beacon of artistic brilliance for the ages.
