DescriptionWhen I saw this piece at San Diego I knew I had to have it. I especially love this particular time period of BWS' illustrious career. This piece was published in several places, notably in an slightly altered form in Barry's memorable self published Shelf Stuff. Sublime heavier dash-dot inking that is particular to 1974 for Smith, breathtaking composition and sensual inks. Notice there is no bow strings; The previous owner asked Barry to add them and the artist declined, saying they aren't needed. I agree. Similarly, Frazetta's Silver Warrior painting illustrates a barbarian in a chariot being pulled by polar bears; there's no ropes or reigns visible in that picture either. Frank told me, 'it would look awkward with the reigns; your mind adds them in and you don't even notice they are missing'. I think the same logic applies here. I LOVE LOVE LOVE this piece. Lastly the artist matted the piece back in the day and choose the colors-- they still look perfectly suited to the drawing 45 years later, so I've left it all as the artist intended.Social/Sharing |

No bowstring needed. Also, the vertical lines on the extended arm show what must be the bowstring actually... vibrating (?). So maybe BWS should've added a TWANGGGG sound effect ?!?!?!

Stunning. Robin Hood one of my all time favorite literary characters and movies (Erroll Flynn) and BWS' inking here is incredible. Bravo!

Frazetta's "string theory" is one I can actually unerstand. Okay, now that I have got that out off my system, Gorblimey Press was ahead of its time and I can understand your fascination with this period in BWS's history and also how you fell in love with this piece.

I'd have bought this piece even just for the grass and vegetation :) Congrats on this pen and ink masterpiece by his majesty BWS!

Wow, a truly wonderful piece, Rob. Congratulations! It reminds me a bit of some early British book illustration, like W. Heath Robinson's early stuff. I'm sure that Smith was quite familiar with that work. Lovely.

Would loved to have been a fly on the wall when the previous owner asked Barry to add the string. That must have been an interesting conversation. Gorgeous piece from a wonderful period.
