Description

In the 1920s and 1930s, Walter Berndt incorporated real-life baseball players into his Smitty comic strip. In 1929, Cupples & Leon published “Smitty at the Ball Game”, which reprinted daily strips featuring some of the most well-known players of the era, including Babe Ruth. Berndt created dozens and dozens of baseball-themed strips featuring players, but in all of my years of collecting, this is the only original from those story lines that I have seen. In this strip from July 7, 1932, Smitty spies the Hall of Fame short-stop Rabbit Maranville making one of his famous basket catches. Maranville imparts some life lessons onto Smitty, who only has eyes on getting Maranville’s autograph, which he does. In a number of daily strips, Berndt featured signatures of well-known baseball players, and this daily features an authentic autograph pasted down into the last panel! This is really rare stuff, and has been in my collection for about 20 years. If you’re a fan of old comic strips and baseball, it doesn’t get much better than this. The strip measures 6¾”x 21½” and is in solid Fine condition. You can see some light glue-staining from when Berndt attached the autograph to the daily, but everything reads nice and clear, with good contrast. $800.00 + 22.00 Priority shipping/insurance.
