DescriptionAlthough the Red Hulk appeared on the cover of Hulk v2 #1, he only appeared in the issue as part of a flashback sequence, as Doc Samson & She-Hulk worked together to re-create a savage battle between the Abomination and an unknown killer. To confuse the reader, the flashback scenes were all colored in green hues and featured a Hulk-looking character, making you think it may have been our regular Hulk (Bruce Banner) who had been the killer. But the major mystery was why the killer used a gun to make the killing blow. As Thunderbolt Ross says, "Since when does THE HULK use a GUN?" Oh, Thaddeus, you trickster. The Red Hulk first appeared "in real time" (in our present, and in his true red colors) on a double page splash in issue #2, and this image was used for the 2nd print wraparound cover. This is the cover I have posted tonight. (Special thanks to Will Gabri-El for parting with this one.) Social/Sharing |

I enjoyed this series and the idea of Red Hulk. While I hate derivatives I felt one it was an organic and ironic twist. Bravo!

McGuiness' Hulk is a modern classic, and the way he staged the lighting here is magnificent!

Hate to break it to you my good friend but Hulk Issue 1 Page 1 is the first appearance of Red Hulk. The entire panels were all painted in green like from a green glowing moon to give it artistic whodunnit mystery because the players all thought it was the Banner Hulk: A green sky, green ground, green dust ups, green houses, green fence, green barrels, green windows and so on, most everything was colored with a a green hue. But it was the Ross, the Red Hulk. Spiked hair. Pupiless eyes. Etc. That's what Ed Mcguinness drew and Dexter Vines inked.
I have Hulk Issue 1 Page 1 in my collection if you want to check it out. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. I love the art though! :)

Hey man, Thanks for writing in, and I see your point. I guess I should say that this DPS is his first appearance "in real time," and not in flashback (as Doc Samson & She-Hulk speculate about how the battle went down.) And yeah, I guess the DPS is also the first time we seem him with his 'true colors.' I will make that change in my description.

Thanks for being so cool about it. I sort of felt like a jerk telling you.
Yeah, we saw the Red Hulk's arms before this art in issue #2 grabbing She-Hulk, but indeed this was the first full [n-issue body shot of the Red Hulk that was painted red by the colorist and in real time.
I love how Ed differentiates Rulk with no eyebrows, spikey hair, souless eyes, black fingernails and that jaw! Great stuff!
