Description

This is my fourth Crepax and I am finally willing to admit there is a problem here, I am addicted to his art and design. I can explain one or two piece but the third and forth piece just a few months apart...there was some serious jonesing going on. On having opened the package this piece came in and first viewing it in person I was already thinking I could use another 3 or 4 of these...it is time for an intervention.

I have written quite a bit about Crepax in the description of my two Valentina pages and so I won't bore you with repeating all the things I have previously gushed over when it comes to Crepax. I got this page from a Parisian gallery that was doing a Crepax show. Up until this show (and a recent one at Scott Eder's gallery), it was very difficult to find Crepax art for sale and it is not inexpensive. It was rare and you took what you could get and I had been fortunate to have found some pages I was very fond of and captured a lot of what I look for in Crepax. The one thing that was missing was the panel design that Crepax pioneered. It is something not well represented in the previous piece I had and so there was still something missing from my collection and perhaps that niche is now filled. As much as I love the surreal and impressionistic elongated figures and images Crepax creates, I think it is his layouts and designs that show his true genius. I had hesitantly asked Chris Ware if Crepax was an influence on his panel design and layouts and it was without hesitation he endorsed that theory and commented on what an innovator he was. In addition to the use of varying panel designs and layouts, Crepax created characters out of body parts. In particular the eyes, hair and mouths of the players could be seen as individual characters.

This page is from the Story of O from 1973 which is a prime period for Crepax art.

Delicious and intricate. Very typical of Crepax in his prime.

The best piece to date, in your growing Crepax collection! I'm sure the next one will be even better ;)

It is, indeed, intricate. It is also the sum of its parts and more than that as well. Cheers.

Beautiful, elegant storytelling, I can understand your addiction!  :)  Hope I don’t ever bump into you, homeless and mangy, just whispering to passersby...”Crepax, got any Crepax man...just a panel or two...all I need....please, man....” :)
