a Prelim for the cover to the 1982 paperback:

Molly and the Indian Agent by Stephen Overholser was copyrighted in 1982 and is the sixth book in Overholser's "Molly" series. This large print, hardcover edition was published in 2004 by the Thorndike Press in Waterville, Maine. The "Molly" in the series titles is Molly Owens who is a turn-of-the-century (i.e., late 1800's to early 1900's) private investigator for the Fenton Investigative Agency in New York City. In this installment, our protagonist, Molly, travels to the Pitchfork ranch, which lies between the town of Crowheart, Wyoming, and the nearby Shoshone Indian reservation, to solve a murder mystery. (Just a note of interest...these are actually real places.) The story opens with a clandestine meeting in the abandoned Fort Laramie, Wyoming between Molly and U.S. Army General Zachary Monroe Holcomb. (Once again, this is a real place. Fort Laramie is a famous fort on the Oregon Trail that was abandoned in 1890.) General Holcomb's brother, Isaiah Holcomb, has been murdered and the General is not satisfied with the progress of the investigation and the competence of the local authorities. The townspeople are blaming Shoshone warriors for the murder based on some very flimsy circumstantial evidence. The General has requested the Fenton Agency conduct a discreet private investigation into the matter...and so our story begins. It isn't long before Molly realizes that this is much more than a simple murder investigation. Things quickly escalate as Molly clashes with the possibly corrupt local Indian Agent and then another murder occurs! Is Molly the next target? Can she solve the mystery and identify the murderer in time to stop a war between the Shoshones and the Army? And what are those mysterious pack mule trails inside the reservation?
