DescriptionPosting the 2nd of 4 Black Panther (BP) adds to start the year out from artists that have had signature runs on the character. Here’s the late great Billy Graham’s contribution! Rich Buckler started out BP’s first solo story, Panther’s Rage, in dramatic fashion but the majority of the run was done by Mr. Graham, and in large part as a result, has gone down as a truly renowned arc for many. Released initially before my time, and as a big BP fan, I later read and have come to appreciate the Panther’s Rage epic, which spanned 13 issues – a great example of long form storytelling and very rare in comics at the time. So, I had to get a piece, and this one just hit on all points for me. BP’s in action and is in 6 of 7 panels, accompanied by that dramatic McGregor dialogue! Some great illustration, moving, and pacing throughout the page. I’d also be remiss not mentioning uncredited inker Virgilio Redondo who adds meticulous lines throughout. Lastly, got a great splashy shot in the last panel of primary antagonist, Erik Killmonger. For me, it’s also very cool that I’ve got a page from the initial Panther’s Rage issue, #6 by Rich Buckler (check it out!), and this page wrapping up the arc, if you don’t include the epilogue issue. Literally the arrival and death (first death, anyway!) of Killmonger! I just found out today that the Black Panther film was nominated for 7 Academy awards, including Best Picture, which is a first for a superhero film. Who would’ve thought back then that would or could EVER be the case?! Whether a fan of the character/film or not, a great achievement, and even greater for the Jungle Action creative team, knowing much of the film’s basis comes from this arc. Hope y’all like! Totally agree, Drake! As a kid of the '80s its initial release was before my time but I've read and re-read it a few times and it absolutely holds up as a prime graphic storytelling example! And congrats on your Jungle Action Graham collection as well...you've got some real nice ones, man! Thanks, all, for the comments!

Excellent page and (as always) an informative & enjoyable description! How fitting that you are featuring significant Black Panther artists, as T'Challa is now the chairperson and leader of the Avengers in the current comic book series. And how great that the movie has been nominated for 7 Academy awards, including Best Picture! It is most definitely "The Year of the Panther."

For sure, Paul! Crazy, and very cool, to see how this little known character, for most, has really blown up! We'll see if T'Challa's leadership duties carry over into the MCU...waiting with bated breath for Avengers: Endgame! Not sure if the BP movie has a shot at winning Best Picture but it even being nominated is unreal. "Wakanda Forever!" :)

Billyt Graham had a fluid touch on his Panther art that made him look and feel lethal. impressive pick up and it great to see the love BP gets today. I read these comic books as a kid when they came out and BP was one of my favorites. he never came off as a second tier character to me. Today the whole world talks about BLACK PANTHER.

Thanks for the great comment, Mike. The initial release of Panther’s Rage was before I was born but I, too, never saw BP as a second tier character and reading Panther’s Rage later just solidified that even more. It’s awesome to see that everyone now knows T’Challa the Black Panther - ‘bout time and well deserved!

This arc not only defined the character, it gave him his definitive person. Nobody dared walk away from this.
Well, except maybe Jack Kirby on his short and sweet, almost comic, run. But, hey, he co-created the Black Panther, so he's got all the rights to do it, right?...
But I digress... A splendid page! By the by: you've got Killmonger here! So cool!

Hmmm...I’d say if anyone had any license it’d be the King ;)
Thanks for the comment, Al! The Killmonger image was absolutely one of the reasons I picked this up as my Graham Jungle Action example, and overall, the page just hit on all cylinders for me!

Not sure any artist touched Graham on this title. Incredible scope or scale to this page as well. Congratulations on your whole BP world collection.

All hail THE KING and BP Whisperer Graham! The dynamism and gothic touch on Panther -- as exhibited so well here -- are gonna endure for all time...
