Quite fantastic! I see Thomas has this commission piece illustated on his site. I guess the scene comes directly from the novel-did he say if any previous illustrations influenced it?

Actually, Thomas attempted to draw this illustration without following the patterns set out by Paul, Frazetta, Krenkel, et al. He re-read the novel and then tried to interpret the scene as he saw it in his mind's eye.
