“I Think I’m Getting Bunions” (09/30/1985)

A native Bostonian, Germano became a full-time cartoonist in 1948, at age 24, after serving in WWII. Among other positions, he worked as the editorial and sports cartoonist for the Brockton Enterprise from 1963-1990.

Radio Address to the Nation on Free and Fair Trade (August 31, 1985), after vetoing a bill that would have imposed tariffs and quotas on foreign show imports.

“Last Wednesday I notified Congress of my decision not to impose either quotas or tariffs on foreign show imports into this country. I’d like to talk with you about that decision because the case of shoe imports illustrates why protectionism is almost always self-destructive, doing more harm than good even to those it’s supposed to be helping.”

The cartoon is self-explanatory: a month later, the US shoe industry was still pushing back on this. Shoe imports to the US rose from about 900 million pairs per year in 1985 to almost 2.5 billion pairs in 2006, and has leveled off at just above 2 billion a year.
