DescriptionWhenever I look at an artist’s work I always imagine how awesome it would be to see a Kimono Girl in their style. Of course I can’t commission everyone to do one even though I would love to. One artist I had considered having do one multiple times over the past few years was Andrew Hem. Well on May 1st I decided to email Andrew and see if he did commissions. As with most artists I ask, he was excited about the idea. He finished the piece much sooner than I was expecting and had it mailed off before he left for a month in Paris where he is going to be having a solo show starting shortly at Galerie Openspace. He said he really enjoyed working on it and I can definitely tell he did. I think this just might be the fastest I've received a painting I commissioned but in no way does it look like he rushed to get finished.About a week after I commissioned the piece Andrew shared 3 sketches for me to choose from. 2 of the sketches had a more geisha-esque feel to them but the 3rd was perfect. It featured the Kimono Girl playing a shamisen. I didn’t have any pieces like it so naturally it was my choice. Other than that I had no idea where he was going to go from there since he said the sketches were just showing the pose he was thinking of. Before he shipped the piece he sent me an image of it and I was absolutely speechless when I saw it. What he came up with is absolutely breathtaking. The Kimono Girl is simply stunning and painted as only he can. There is a wonderful serene feeling to the piece as she plays her shamisen amongst the phenomenal fall foliage. I love the details on the Kimono. They’re just a fun design that gives a little playfulness to the piece. For me the real showstopper has to be that amazing background. When I saw it I was blown away. It goes so beautifully with her and helps draw you in. The atmosphere is just fantastic. I love that he decided to go a completely different direction with the background. So many artists would have gone with cherry blossoms but that beautiful fall foliage just works. Andrew’s use of color is outstanding. I love everything about the piece and I couldn’t be any happier with it. I’m so glad I decided to commission Andrew. I should have done it much sooner. Simply a breathtaking Kimono Girl for the collection from an outstanding artist. Thrilled to have such an awesome piece by Andrew in my collection. Size 11x14 on wood panel Social/Sharing |
