“It’s a Raid!” (undated, 1970s)
By Eddie Germano (1924 - )
11 x 15, ink and wash on board

A native Bostonian, Germano became a full-time cartoonist in 1948, at age 24, after serving in WWII. Among other positions, he worked as the editorial and sports cartoonist for the Brockton Enterprise from 1963-1990.

Women may have been gaining in politics, but their depiction by the artist is still drowned in stereotype and bias. We hardly have here a welcoming and receptive view being represented on either side (and there are clearly sides).

"The decisive break came in the 1970s. A new feminist movement made antique the assumptions that slotted political women into gender-suitable positions. A wider pipeline moved women with JDs as well as political experience into office: the first-ever non-widowed governors and a crop of new House members. Feminists such as Shirley Chisholm, Patsy Mink, and Belle Abzug built on the work of Martha Griffith and Edith Green, long-serving representatives who had advanced women’s equality."
