Description

New commission: All-Star Squadron #100, art by Stephen Baskerville,. based as always on the cover of a comic written, plotted or scripted by Roy Thomas, in this case Marvel Premiere #30, original art by Jack Kirby.

Story: (deep breath...)

At the end of issue #99, the returning All-Stars tracked down Funnyface, but a wawyard punch from Johnny Quick threw him into a newsstand, and his bio-ray brought a new army of comics characters to life to battle our heroes. In this issue, the members of the League of Liberty trade blows with various Squadron stalwarts - Yellowstone vs Robotman; U.S.Male vs the Whip, All-American Girl vs Liberty Belle, Blue Jay soaring to attack Flying Fox, Snowman freezing Hourman, Sgt Stretch and Plastic Man involved in a pliable punch-up, and the Flash chasing down Jack B Quick.

Elsewhere, the Manx Cat and Tabby pounce on Neptune Perkins and Tsunami; Miss America and Krysalis team up to combat Liz Liberty and Dame Disguise; Firebrand takes on the Blaze and Blaze Girl; Green Lantern and the Grim Ghost try to restrain the spectral Dr Vengeance; Mr Terric is attacked by the Battlin' Yank; Wildcat finds himself in combat with the Hanging Judge; and Manhunter dodges the thrown boomerang of Thrillseeker.

In the skies above, the Blackhawk Squadron, Hawkgirl and the Shining Knight have an aerial duel with aviators Flyboy, Brunhilde, Airfox, Vandervecken, and the Knight Flier; on the ground, Tarantula battles the Gray Cowl; Amazing Man and Dan the Dyna-Mite face off against Jolly Roger and the Little Terror; Iron Munro battles 'Anvil' Armstong; the American Sentinel and Duffy fight with Commander Steel and Robin; Johnny Quick speeds after the Bronze Blur; the team of Captain Independence, Spark Gregson and Pussycat clash with Fury, Air Wave and Doll Man, and Rick and Roxanne Rocket are confronted by Bulletman and Bulletgirl.

After extended battles, Mr Terrific grabs the Flash and gets him to race the two of them away, only to return with the real Funnyface, who has remained in prison. As Superman, Batman and wonder Woman arrive with the defeated Americommando, Fireball and Barracuda, Johnny Quick wrestles the bio-ray from the new villain, and the freed crook reverses the weapon, returning the created comics characters to their two-dimensional origins. The new Funnyface is revealed as an associate of the original - who had stolen a prototype bio-ray and used it for his own ends.

With the villain behind bars, the All-Stars are finally able to relax - although that won't last long in a world at war!

Stephen did a phenomenal job with this one --- and as you may be able to tell, I nearly killed myself coming up with pastiche Golden Age character for the All-Stars to battle against...

Insane. A great cover to homage ( used it myself ) but Stephen brought it to NEW HEIGHTS
